James 2:14

14What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

18But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

21Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?

23And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. 24You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

25Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? 26For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Greetings,

I just want to jump in and thank those that donated last week! If you go to our pictures links my daughters updates it off and one…it was just updated.

http://pictures.messiahsbranch.org/

So many people, like Friday mom made beef teriyaki for the 4:30 PM meal and they loved it. During the day were served egg and cheese tortillas as that was what we served instead of sandwiches during un-leavened bread week. The people loved them of course.

Friday we were a day past unleavened bread so they got sweets like cakes etc.

I had heard that someone out of state was going to see about getting us a large donation of food but it has not came through yet, those things I do not count on till they come in the door. We are making it as we are still open with more and more people coming.

Buying the large amount of food we do now weekly for those mostly non-homeless is cutting into bill money. I know mom need’s roughly a $1,000 to get caught up.

Radio really needs a donation of $200, as that is what I pay a month. I still am pumping the brakes on the bus, which is really not good.

I bought some medications and a few tooth brushes at the Dollar tree, If you want to buy hygiene items or Ibuprofen, or other things you can buy them cheaper online by the case http://www.dollartree.com/health-personal-care/medicine-first-aid/211c251c251/index.cat

and have them delivered to the Freestanding Wichita – Store #18561224 West Pawnee Wichita, KS 67213

http://www.dollartree.com/custserv/locate_store.cmd

Just let me know when it will be there, the shipping is free that way! The store has so much we use…..so check it out….

Also you can send some dollar items for the children or even socks!

Okay now I really need some prayer warriors to help me pray in some more regular supporters. This is called intercessors and it is Biblical to ask for their help. The devil will try and discourage people from helping but remember we can disagree about many things but we know we are all saved by Grace and no one can earn there way to Heaven But Faith with out works being alone in Dead. I can see no one not believing we should love our neighbors as ourselves and feed the poor and homeless! So Stand with us please. We need your help.

Lift us in prayer and help if you can! A psalm for you at the bottom!

In His Perfect Peace,
Pastor Dan Catlin

Psalm 37

A Psalm of David.

1 Do not fret because of evildoers,

Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.

2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,

And wither as the green herb.

3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;

Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.

4 Delight yourself also in the Lord,

And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the Lord,

Trust also in Him,

And He shall bring it to pass.

6 He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,

And your justice as the noonday.

7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;

Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,

Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.

8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;

Do not fret—it only causes harm.

9 For evildoers shall be cut off;

But those who wait on the Lord,

They shall inherit the earth.

10 For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more;

11 But the meek shall inherit the earth,

And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

12 The wicked plots against the just,

And gnashes at him with his teeth.

13 The Lord laughs at him,

For He sees that his day is coming.

14 The wicked have drawn the sword

And have bent their bow,

To cast down the poor and needy,

To slay those who are of upright conduct.

15 Their sword shall enter their own heart,

And their bows shall be broken.

16 A little that a righteous man has

Is better than the riches of many wicked.

17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken,

But the Lord upholds the righteous.

18 The Lord knows the days of the upright,

And their inheritance shall be forever.

19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time,

And in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

20 But the wicked shall perish;

And the enemies of the Lord

Like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish.

Into smoke they shall vanish away.

21 The wicked borrows and does not repay,

But the righteous shows mercy and gives.

22 For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth,

But those cursed by Him shall be cut off.

23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord,

And He delights in his way.

24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;

For the Lord upholds him with His hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old;

Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken,

Nor his descendants begging bread.

26 He is ever merciful, and lends;

And his descendants are blessed.

27 Depart from evil, and do good;

And dwell forevermore.

28 For the Lord loves justice,

And does not forsake His saints;

They are preserved forever,

But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off.

29 The righteous shall inherit the land,

And dwell in it forever.

The law of his God is in his heart;

None of his steps shall slide.

32 The wicked watches the righteous,

And seeks to slay him.

33 The Lord will not leave him in his hand,

Nor condemn him when he is judged.

34 Wait on the Lord,

And keep His way,

And He shall exalt you to inherit the land;

When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.

35 I have seen the wicked in great power,

And spreading himself like a native green tree.

36 Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more;

Indeed I sought him, but he could not be found.

37 Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright;

For the future of that man is peace.

38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together;

The future of the wicked shall be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;

He is their strength in the time of trouble.

40 And the Lord shall help them and deliver them;

He shall deliver them from the wicked,

And save them,

Because they trust in Him.

Homeless and poor in Wichita, Ks., the people know they are

different because they keep the Sabbath and give them

Yeshua’s love, though this the people cared for have seen many miracles. The people dubbed Dan as Pastor Dan and sometimes in articles based on true events he writes as “The Pastor”. And yes he is and ordained minister with a family church called “Messiah’s Branch” Just a small family church that Yahweh blesses many in need through by Faith.

Romans 1:17

 17For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. 18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

Joshua 24:15

15And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

As the pastor looked at His family he again realized that just about 20 years ago a miracle happened and he met Messiah. In child-hood he had went forward and asked Jesus-Christ to be his Lord and savior at a summer bible school.

He prayed to him all his life knowing that he was there even when he was the worst of the worst out-laws, then came that day when he looked into a mirror realizing that the person he saw was not the person he ever wanted to be.

At that place in time he again prayed and cried, this time something was different, he seem more alive and awake that ever before. He realized that the Dream of becoming the ultimate out-law Biker was only a way to be a servant of the Devil and not a servant of Yahweh, his real Father….Yes a miracle…

At that point he realized money and lifestyle meant nothing only the things of His Father mattered.

Of course Satan did not give up that easy and tried to put the Pastor in jail for 25 years but the Pastor held onto his faith only asking of His Father that he be allowed to raise His family and all other time would be given to The Father’s work…..

The years were truly a test, following His Father’s way in real truth and spirit put him very alone, you see he read his Bible and went from church to church seeking the people of the book.

Outcast from the world and not fitting into the many churches he kept his word to the Father, the more obedient he became to the word the more blessed he was, not in money but blessed in a way only the real people of The Father know.

Then that day came that the Father spoke to him and Said “You are my minister” the pastor remembered the promise given. With no money but faith the pastor got up out of his bed doctors had tried to place him and in and went forth to serve.

Now almost 20 years later, he is still the brokest man on the block, but in heavenly terms he is rich beyond measure, having forsaken the devils ways he was given a family and even a ministry, yes a ministry as he laugh’s at how he told the Father to give him a broom and he would sweep up the kingdom of heaven…somthing

he had heard another man of God say and he laughed at just how it worked….the ministry was now in it’s 9th year of caring for the poor with no money….

Yes the Pastor again looks at his family all gathered in the small house with wood stove warming everyone, laughing at the holes in the floor and yet thankful so thankful that he has a roof….and of course a wonderful family.

Snapping back to reality the Pastor looks outside to the snow coming down and for a moment wonders where the money will come in the morning to care for the people The Father has entrusted him to care for will come from. Poor and the homeless that will count on his family the next day… but then he remembers that it is The Father’s family and the Father’s work, so for tomorrow there is no worry by faith all things come….with that another log is placed on the fire with tomorrow’s troubles…..

Doing His will…?

The Lest of These

The Least of These

Matthew 25:44

44Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Greetings Saints,
Please read the below article, unless you own your home outright you could be one of these people. In Wichita it is too bad the churches are not doing what they are supposed to, this problem is not a government problem but a spiritual one.

When Messiah came he said some things like is recorded in
Matthew 11:4
4Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: 5The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

Messiah spent his time traveling around to the poor preaching the gospel he even made sure those that heard him were fed as all of you I am sure know about Yeshua and the fishes right?

He even warned us what would happen when He the King would return and how we would be judged, example?

Matthew 25:31

31When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: 32And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

You know I complain about people not using the whole Word of God but alas they do not even do what Messiah says in the New Scriptures. In order to be saved we have to be doer’s of the word, we cannot just say I am saved then sit down on the couch.

I mean when is the last time you got up and instead of asking God for this or than asked him WHAT Can you do for him today? You see that is the point as it shows here, love thy neighbor as thy self. It is one thing to say but you must be a doer of the word.

James 1:19

19Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. 21Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 22But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. 26If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. 27Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Luke 6:43
43For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 44For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. 45A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. 46And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 47Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

So are you a doer of the word? Is your church? Does the church you attend encourage you to spread the gospel to the poor? Do they call the poor in for service? Just opening doors does not count they are supposed to be as Messiah was and go to where the sinners are at. They is many clear passages in the New Scriptures that speak of this.
Do they have people going to the hospitals and jails? Instead of building programs do they have building the kingdom programs?
Do they feed the hungry? Paul said he gave everything he had to the poor, Messiah said sell all and give to the poor and follow me, word after word on and one the gospel is centered around the Love of the Father and Love of Man Like Yeshua said: Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
He Also says judge them by their fruits? I hear from many on the net about this ministry or that ministry, but man if those ministries or churches are adding people to the kingdom are the complainers making disciples of all men? Have you helped anyone to be saved to know the King?

Sound harsh? I am just showing you how the church and the people that are supposed to be saved are falling down.

So say well I donate and pay tithes as I cannot go out and do this for one reason or another? If the church or ministry you are supporting does these things then you did well, but remember you have personal responsibility to help others by showing love and kindness, talking about your savior Yeshua Messiah, or the translation Jesus Christ….

One more scripture then I pray you read the article below.
James 2:14
14What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. 25Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? 26For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

People say, I do not know what the Lord’s will is in my life it is simple, Love him first and Love your neighbor second, I just showed you what the Lord’s will is in everyone’s life, accomplish these things and in the time of trouble the saves places to be in in the Lord Yeshua’a will…… I know I am are YOU?

Lift us in prayer and help if you can, we are in great need of people to support what we do, of course if you are doing it on your own all the better, but anything will help.

US Housing Crisis Pushing Up Homelessness

by Sherwood Ross

Global Research, February 1, 2009

Every Christmas season a large electric star visible for miles is illuminated on a mountainside overlooking Bethlehem, Pa., to commemorate the time the holy family of Christianity took refuge in a manger on the night of Christ’s birth.

This past Christmas, this city of 71,000—whose principal landmark is the rusting remains of the once thriving Bethlehem Steel Corporation—was unable to shelter its own growing number of homeless families from bitterly cold weather.

As in the New Testament account, there was no room at the inn for some and the city, citing “liability issues,” turned down requests to house the homeless on freezing nights in its jail or in the parking garage under City Hall.

“Here is what we are facing in the Lehigh Valley,” writes Marcie Lightwood, a social worker at Trinity Episcopal Church in the local Morning Call:

“Thousands of jobs have been lost in the past six months. When this happens, renters (and some homeowners) have two or three months before they get evicted. Then they may have another month or two of living in a vehicle (if they have one) or sofa surfing with friends and relatives. If they had foresight, they got on one of the waiting lists for one of the shelters, which are full…” The churches alone, she notes, can’t do it all.

“We also have the chronically homeless, people whose income will never allow them to pay rent, who may have had mental illnesses, substance abuse or criminal histories.” And she warns many others “are fast approaching homelessness.”

Bethlehem is no isolated example. As Patrick Markee of the Coalition for the Homeless and reporter Lizzy Ratner write in the February 9 The Nation magazine, “Long before subprime mortgages, credit default swaps and the most recent stock market crash, the United States was in the grip of the longest period of sustained mass homelessness since the Great Depression.”

Even as George Bush’s war of aggression forced 4-million Iraqis from their homes, triggering what the United Nations termed a “humanitarian crisis,” there were nearly as many Americans, 3.5-million, including 1.4 million children, “that experienced homelessness in the course of a year,” Markee observed. Surely, their plight also qualifies as an “humanitarian crisis,” yet public indifference left many, as in Bethlehem, to sleep in the cold.

“As people have lost their paychecks, or as the homes they were renting were foreclosed—most of today’s homeless foreclosure victims are renters who were evicted, even though they paid rent, because their landlord had not kept up with the mortgage—their tenuous grip on stability has slipped away,” Markee wrote.

Last year, 3.2-million foreclosures were filed nationally, the magazine said, and Markee predicts “the number of homeless families will likely continue to spike.”

According to the Los Angeles-based Institute For The Study of Homelessness and Poverty, Los Angeles leads the nation with 91,000 homeless, followed by New York City with 48,000, Detroit with 14,000; Houston with 12,000; and San Francisco, Atlanta, Chicago, and Philadelphia, all with about 6,000.

Markee traces the homeless surge back to the early days of President Reagan who “set about systematically dismantling federal housing programs, (and) slashing funds for federal rental vouchers and public housing. He also initiated the shift in federal low-income housing policy away from subsidized development to tax-credit programs, which fail to help the poorest families.”

And even as President George W. Bush “made a show of doling out small increases to the homeless services budget (though never enough to meet the need),” Markee writes, his administration “hacked away at public housing, Section 8 vouchers and other housing programs, undermining any attempt at reducing family homelessness.” The housing expert added that since 2004 funding for affordable housing programs declined by $2.2 billion.

Bush’s mean-spirited Federal philosophy has been echoed nationally by cities that enacted laws to criminalize the homeless by arresting them for panhandling or even sitting, eating, and sleeping in public places. Some towns even ticket them for trivial offenses. “When you are giving out trespassing and jaywalking tickets to homeless people, it’s just harassment,” Linda Lera-Randle El, a homeless advocate in Las Vegas, Nev., told The Review-Journal.

Apparently, a good many people regard the homeless as drifters and bums. House The Homeless, an Austin, Tex.-based advocacy non-profit, however, found 38 percent of the Austin homeless are employed. “Presently, there are over one million minimum wage workers experiencing homelessness on an annual basis,” HH reports. “The current minimum wage structure does not elevate the minimum wage worker to a level where they can afford basic housing and other core necessities of life.”

Although a majority of the Austin’s 4,000 homeless are unemployed, 89.7 percent told HH that they want to work but gave health issues, disability, or inability to find work as barriers. Twenty-three percent said they are veterans.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition, with 40 other policy groups, is urging Congress to enact a $45 billion proposal to create permanent housing with support services for the mentally ill and to provide housing vouchers or low-income housing to homeless families. According to The Nation, the plan calls for a minimum of 400,000 new rental vouchers as well as a $10 billion infusion over two years in the recently created National Housing Trust Fund—“a move that would jump-start construction of badly needed low-cost homes.”

The plan also urges expanded aid for foreclosure victims, $15.4 billion to upgrade and improve the energy efficiency of neglected public housing, and to devote $2 billion to homelessness prevention. “Taken together, these initiatives will help more than 800,000 vulnerable households and create more than 200,000 jobs,” Markee writes.

“Cleaning up the wreckage of three decades of failed federal housing policy will take more than one stimulus,” he concludes, as “these measures are just the beginning of what’s needed. But if change is the order of the day, dismantling the Reagan-Bush legacy of modern homelessness would be a promising way to start.”

Tent Cities

Coming soon to the Rest of the country?

As you can see there is a new form of homeless and it is going to get worse, The Lord Yeshua has called us to help these people as all should do…

In hard times, tent cities rise across the country

By EVELYN NIEVES, Associated Press WriterThu Sep 18, 1:03 PM ET  AP

AP Photo: Mack Martinez, 19, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, smokes in front of his tent at the…

A few tents cropped up hard by the railroad tracks, pitched by men left with nowhere to go once the emergency winter shelter closed for the summer.

Then others appeared — people who had lost their jobs to the ailing economy, or newcomers who had moved to Reno for work and discovered no one was hiring.

Within weeks, more than 150 people were living in tents big and small, barely a foot apart in a patch of dirt slated to be a parking lot for a campus of shelters Reno is building for its homeless population. Like many other cities, Reno has found itself with a “tent city” — an encampment of people who had nowhere else to go.

From Seattle to Athens, Ga., homeless advocacy groups and city agencies are reporting the most visible rise in homeless encampments in a generation.

Nearly 61 percent of local and state homeless coalitions say they’ve experienced a rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007, according to a report by the National Coalition for the Homeless. The group says the problem has worsened since the report’s release in April, with foreclosures mounting, gas and food prices rising and the job market tightening.

“It’s clear that poverty and homelessness have increased,” said Michael Stoops, acting executive director of the coalition. “The economy is in chaos, we’re in an unofficial recession and Americans are worried, from the homeless to the middle class, about their future.”

The phenomenon of encampments has caught advocacy groups somewhat by surprise, largely because of how quickly they have sprung up.

“What you’re seeing is encampments that I haven’t seen since the 80s,” said Paul Boden, executive director of the Western Regional Advocacy Project, an umbrella group for homeless advocacy organizations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Calif., Portland, Ore. and Seattle.

The relatively tony city of Santa Barbara has given over a parking lot to people who sleep in cars and vans. The city of Fresno, Calif., is trying to manage several proliferating tent cities, including an encampment where people have made shelters out of scrap wood. In Portland, Ore., and Seattle, homeless advocacy groups have paired with nonprofits or faith-based groups to manage tent cities as outdoor shelters. Other cities where tent cities have either appeared or expanded include include Chattanooga, Tenn., San Diego, and Columbus, Ohio.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development recently reported a 12 percent drop in homelessness nationally in two years, from about 754,000 in January 2005 to 666,000 in January 2007. But the 2007 numbers omitted people who previously had been considered homeless — such as those staying with relatives or friends or living in campgrounds or motel rooms for more than a week.

In addition, the housing and economic crisis began soon after HUD’s most recent data was compiled.

“The data predates the housing crisis,” said Brian Sullivan, a spokesman for HUD. “From the headlines, it might appear that the report is about yesterday. How is the housing situation affecting homelessness? That’s a great question. We’re still trying to get to that.”

In Seattle, which is experiencing a building boom and an influx of affluent professionals in neighborhoods the working class once owned, homeless encampments have been springing up — in remote places to avoid police sweeps.

“What’s happening in Seattle is what’s happening everywhere else — on steroids,” said Tim Harris, executive director of Real Change, an advocacy organization that publishes a weekly newspaper sold by homeless people.

Homeless people and their advocates have organized three tent cities at City Hall in recent months to call attention to the homeless and protest the sweeps — acts of militancy, said Harris, “that we really haven’t seen around homeless activism since the early ’90s.”

In Reno, officials decided to let the tent city be because shelters were already filled.

Officials don’t know how many homeless people are in Reno. “But we do know that the soup kitchens are serving hundreds more meals a day and that we have more people who are homeless than we can remember,” said Jodi Royal-Goodwin, the city’s redevelopment agency director.

Those in the tents have to register and are monitored weekly to see what progress they are making in finding jobs or real housing. They are provided times to take showers in the shelter, and told where to go for food and meals.

Sylvia Flynn, 51, came from northern California but lost a job almost immediately and then her apartment.

Since the cheapest motels here charge upward of $200 a week, Flynn ended up at the Reno women’s shelter, which has only 20 beds and a two-week limit on stays.

Out of a dozen people interviewed in the tent city, six had come to Reno from California or elsewhere over the last year, hoping for casino jobs.

“I figured this would be a great place for a job,” said Max Perez, a 19-year-old from Iowa. He couldn’t find one and ended up taking showers at the men’s shelter and sleeping in a pup tent barely big enough to cover his body.

The casinos are actually starting to lay off employees.

“Sometimes I think we need to put out an ad: ‘No, we don’t have any more jobs than you do,’” Royal-Goodwin said.

The city will shut down the tent city as soon as early October because the tents sit on what will be a parking lot for a complex of shelters and services for homeless people. The complex will include a men’s shelter, a women’s shelter, a family shelter and a resource center.

Reno officials aren’t sure whether the construction will eliminate the need for the tent city. The demand, they say, keeps growing.

Messiah’s Branch
Matthew 25:34

Greetings Saints in His Perfect Peace,

 Yesterday Harvey who is sometimes homeless, was at the mission church This last Tuesday. He has been having a tough time because before he could rent a place for him and his soon wife to be, someone hit him over the head and took his money.

If you remember last year Harvey is the one who painted the ceiling and laid floor tile at the mission church. In fact he put off a heart operation to do it as he wanted to see it get done and he did not know if he would make it through the operation. Today he is still in need of another operation but they will not put him under as they fear they will not be able to wake him up, he is in his 60’s.

His wife to be, Donna Love 50 years old, fell down the stairs at a city park and broke her hip and upper portion of her leg. I bought them a motel last Friday as that was all I could buy was one day.

Her leg is infected from walking on it from place to place as no one will take her in because of her leg at least that is the reason the Salvation army gave today. The doctor’s office put her back into the hospital and told them she could loose her leg! So of course I went and anointed her with oil prayed for a miracle last night as she was operated on this morning.

Okay the infection is under control now she did not loose her leg but she has a hose running into her leg draining it and the wound is wide open. Yes it is a miracle but the Devil is trying to still make her loose her leg, working through the Un-Godly!

If she had insurance they would keep her in the hospital, but she has none so they are kicking her out tomorrow with no where to go! If she get’s back on the street then it could go the other way and she could loose her leg!

We need prayers as if I had the money I would rent a room until Harvey get’s His check on the 2nd from Social security. But as you folks know this ministry is still trying to pay all of August bills before we get more shut offs….. If you want to help them email me. She will be put out on the street at noon or before on Thursday!

You see these are the things I deal with all the time, people in such despair you would not believe it. When I get to my bed which even has springs coming through, I am so thankful for it, at least I have one. The house needs tons of work or torn down to tell the truth, but it’s paid for as I got it 16 years ago for back taxes.

The point is we need prayers for this couple and for the ministry, Lift us in prayer and help if you can!

The LORD  bless thee and keep thee;
The LORD make His face shine upon thee,
and be gracious unto thee;
The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee,
and give thee shalom. (peace)

Greetings,

 Today as I have just a short time before radio today, I thought I would write and update. Think for a moment that what would happen if you became disabled, also add that you are an American barely making it or just out of poverty.

The First thing that happens is you lose your job of course, then for most people if they had medical at all you would lose this. If you do not have a wife and children or just children then no help from welfare, maybe some food stamps.

Very soon your bank account if you had any money in it is gone, with no way to pay rent and soon you are homeless. Now think about that, maybe with a terrible disk problem or some other reason you have no way to see a doctor other than the emergency room or a free clinic. When you become mental and most do from living homeless than you can get some help from a mental agency.

In this age generally family and friends drift away from you. You go to social security only to find that you must have a doctor saying you cannot work, most free clinic will not jump in and say you cannot work so somehow you have to find a doctor.

In Wichita if you are a woman there is no shelter for you, some beds are there but very few and they are full most of the time. Men can go to an overcrowded rescue mission that has 69 beds and the rest get floor space. This even get’s full and if you do get in it is very easy to be kicked out for things such as forgetting to turn in your insulin or other medications when you come in. Some very hard rules and it takes a lot to live in this place. Very hard and very scary place to most people, yes it is dangerous.

Many men chose to just live outside, or have to due to no room or being kicked out, women have no choices really it is then prostitute yourself or live under the bride or shack up with anyone who will give you  a place to sleep, really!

Finally you somehow get a doctor and a letter for social security. Only to find they can take up to 3 to 4 years to go all the way through the process. And for get back pay you get only two year’s worth and not all at once, welfare gets what if any they spent on first, then the attorney, so you might get a small amount of back pay.

But what have you turned into? Many once hitting the streets that are disabled turn to drugs and alcohol in order to deal with their lives and by the time they do get money they are generally unable to then handle it after being the street 3 to 4 years…

If you are going to help a homeless person get out of the street you need to get them with in the first 3-6 months before they get into the circle of disaster. Better yet we need programs like welfare used to help before a person is kicked to the curb.

So they act different than you or I and some live in delusions, but would you know in given the same circumstances?

And you do not have to be disabled to get stuck in the street, loose your job, loose your home or rental, car insurance goes un paid, lose your car and then you are in big trouble as no transportation to a job. Try going to look for a job with no clean clothing and your address is the Douglas Bridge.

Anyway at the bottom I am going to post a short article that inspired me to write this one. The people we help many are disabled, some are not, some are women, so many cry to me about having lost their children because they lost their job….terrible.

We need your help to stay open, last months bills mostly are unpaid and this month’s are in, I have electric doubled and they will send shut off’s after the 16th of this month! So please lift this to prayer and we need to do the Work The Lord Yeshua placed us in. And if you read your Bibles it is a book about great persecution for your faith, the closer you get to doing the right thing the harder the world fights against you because you are not part of this world. The Word Church means “ called out ones” we are called out of this world and made different. We suffer this world so we gain the next and eternal life with Yeshua.

In His Perfect Peace, Pastor Dan

Sick and homeless, man gets SSI benefits days before dying

The Oregonian

Bobby Rutherford was a casualty of Social Security’s other disability program.

The native Oklahoman, homeless and mentally ill, was one of the roughly 1 million people who apply each year for Social Security’s Supplemental Security Income. Those benefits, known as SSI, provide 5.4 million aged, blind or otherwise disabled adults an average of $493 a month.

Beneficiaries of that program — separate from the Social Security Disability Insurance program that American workers pay into paycheck by paycheck — come from a swelling underclass of citizens too disabled to start or keep a job.

Money of any kind would have greatly helped Rutherford, who had lifelong trouble holding a job. In 1970, when he was 22, the Marine Corps discharged him after diagnosing him with a “character and behavior disorder.” Later diagnoses included schizoaffective disorder, hepatitis C, depression, anxiety and alcoholism.

Rutherford lost jobs as a laborer and construction flagger because of his delusions and heavy drinking, says longtime girlfriend Debbie Williams. He was sick and penniless by the time he moved into the Klamath Falls Gospel Mission.

He applied for disability benefits in January 2005, but Social Security denied his claims time and again. Then, in October 2006, one of the agency’s administrative law judges ruled that Rutherford had been disabled since June 2004.

Rutherford had been sober for more than a year. But hepatitis savaged his liver. He was pale and losing weight. Still, he was thrilled when his first SSI check reached the mission Dec. 18, 2006, says Beverly Leigh, a homeless advocate who befriended him.

He hoped the $545.50 check — and the $13,248.88 in unpaid benefits heading his way — would move him into an apartment of his own and help him get treatment for his hepatitis, Leigh says.

But four days after his check arrived, a friend found Rutherford dead in his Gospel Mission bed. He was 58.

Social Security officials identified no next of kin to whom to award his benefits. The agency kept his money.

Do you have a story about dealing with the Social Security disability system? We’d like to hear from you by e-mail at disability@news.oregonian.com or by phone at 503-294-5013. This two-part series is the first installment of an ongoing investigation by The Oregonian into Social Security’s unprecedented backlog of disability claims.
